Lackawaxen Township

Masthope Mountain Community is located in the largest and northernmost township in Pike County – Lackawaxen, which became a township back in 1798. Named for the river that flows 12 miles through the Township, Lackawaxen is believed to be the Indian word for “The Sandy Soil” or “The Sandy Place”. If it is pronounced a different way, it translates to “The Place Where Two Rivers Meet,” which fits the geography of the area. The Delaware River marks the eastern boundary of the township and joins the Lackawaxen River at the village of Lackawaxen.

Along with the community of Masthope, Fawn Lake Forest is also situated in Lackawaxen Township, which covers approximately 81.2 square miles. A scenic area within the Upper Delaware River National Park, Lackawaxen is located about a two-hour drive from New York City and about twenty-two miles north-west of Milford, the County Seat of  Pike County, PA. Located in Lackawaxen is the Roebling Bridge, a one-lane, historic suspension bridge that connects Minisink Ford, NY and Lackawaxen, PA. You can drive or walk across the bridge while enjoying the gorgeous view of the Delaware River. Roebling Bridge was actually designed by the future architect of the Brooklyn Bridge, John A. Roebling.

Lackawaxen is also home to the Zane Grey Museum. A renowned and prolific western novelist, Zane Grey and his wife Dolly owned a farmhouse overlooking the Lackawaxen and Delaware rivers. The rivers are what initially drew Zane Grey to the area and fulfilled his love for fishing and the outdoors. After the death of Zane Grey, the house was turned into a museum, now maintained and operated by the National Park Service. The farmhouse/museum is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The popular Zane Grey Festival that’s held each year at the museum offers many activities and events for the entire family.

If you’re looking for some exciting outdoor adventure in Lackawaxen, you can spend the day rafting, kayaking, canoeing or tubing down the Delaware River. The River provides plenty of crystal clear water and rapids all summer long, with regular releases from five different reservoirs maintain the river flow. The Delaware River is the last major undammed river in the eastern United States and supports a healthy ecosystem.
